Tarkine Forest Adventures – Dismal Swamp
Tarkine Forest Adventures is the new name for the former Dismal Swamp site. Tarkine Forest Adventures provides the northern access to the Tarkine and is a unique, large sinkhole which has developed over millions of years.

Open your eyes and your mind to the mystery of life at the bottom of the sinkhole by exploring four pathways through this magical place.
You never know what you might find on the fascinating journey that unfolds as you descend 40 metres from the Visitors Centre into a world where the spirit of nature and the creativity of Tasmanian artists come together.
Ride the Tarkine Slide, a 110m long tube that takes you to the forest floor in a blink of an eye, with a few twists and turns along the way.
Shortly to be opened is an amazing series of mountain bike tracks covering 13 kms suitable for beginners through to experienced cross-country riders. There will be something for everyone on the tracks and mountain bikes can be hired from the Visitors Centre.
A new series of tours will also be provided and you can accompany our guides to Becket’s Hut to hear about how the early pioneers survived in this beautiful but tough environment. The Tarkine After Dark tour will deliver tales of ghosts and hardship, laughs and larrikins, you might even see some of the local wildlife.
The Bushmen’s Tour will take you through the forest guided by a couple of tough pioneers ready to share their yarns and bush tucker with you. They will show you where they once worked, harvesting timber for sawlogs and barrel staves, before the blackwood forest reclaimed its home.
Enjoy Tasmanian food and wine in the café or on the deck overlooking the forest treetops, before or after your journey below. See the enormity of the sinkhole and swamp from the cantilever, suspended off the sinkhole rim at the edge of the deck.
Once you have experienced all there is to see and do at the site, travel on the Tarkine Forest Drive to explore the wonders of the northern Tarkine. This self-drive trip will take in the rugged coast west of Tarkine Forest Adventures and take you south through beautiful rainforest and button-grass plains, across wild rivers and back into Smithton. This trip can easily soak up a day so ask the staff for “must-see” suggestions.
